Sinner: Crash & Burn
Melodic Heavy Metal/Hard Rock
Rating: 4.75/5.0

Sinner is on a roll in this century. Prior to the new era, namesake Matt Sinner delivered basic, sometimes uninspiring, melodic heavy metal. But, beginning with 2004's 'There Will Be Execution,' (Matt) Sinner has found a new vitality. Maybe he's hooked up with some discount Viagra in his middle age (I'm joking here). What we have here is Sinner executing great melodic heavy metal. Sinner and their new release 'Crash & Burn' is a perfect example of what I love about European heavy metal: loud, proud, and melodic with screaming guitars and a steady rhythm section.

Sinner takes off at full speed with great opener 'Crash & Burn' where a solid rhythm section moves the song to a massive guitar solo. And the Sinner rhythm section is the most notable element throughout this work because of it's strength and precision. You can hear this also on 'Break The Silence, 'The Dog,' and 'Connection.' Sinner easily swings the pendulum to melodic hard rock within the metal on such noteworthy songs as 'Revolution' and 'Little Head.' This motif continues in the aforementioned 'Connection' with its quick pace, heavy riffs, and catchy melody, all of which reminded me of Thin Lizzy. Sinner ventures into metal ballad territory on 'Until It Hurts,' and pulls it off quite well. If there is a return to the ordinary, it comes on 'Unbreakable,' an average heavy metal number. Yet, it's still has some fire in its belly and so does not detract from the whole work.

By far, 'Crash & Burn' is Sinner's best work in a decade. I was tapping my foot, banging my head, and playing air guitar throughout the entire work. Solid and satisfying, 'Crash & Burn is great melodic heavy metal. Highly recommended!   - Craig Hartranft
