The last studio album we had from German metal veterans Mob Rules was a long seven years ago with Beast Reborn. It's not that they haven't been busy. In 2019, the band dropped the live album, Beast Over Europe, from the tour of the same name. Only last year, Mob Rules celebrated their 30th anniversary with two compilation albums: Celebration Day: 30 Years Of Mob Rules and Celebration Day: The Vinyl Tracks, which included some favorite cover tracks including DIO's Sacred Heart and Iron Maiden's Run To The Hills. In this same time there were also some personnel changes: guitarist Florian Dyszbalis and drummer Sebastian Schmidt joined the band. Now, Mob Rules arrives with their latest and tenth long player, Rise Of The Ruler, now signed to Rock Of Angels Records.
The current album links to some of Mob Rules past: the conceptual continuation of their two early albums Savage Land (1999) and Temple Of Two Suns (2000), with which Mob Rules laid the foundation for their career. Both albums are linked by an exciting concept story about life in a dystopian, hostile end-time world in which resources are becoming scarce.
The concept and story are explored through Mob Rules familiar version of melodic heavy and power metal which moves with speed and groove and abounds with awesome riffs and guitar solos. A spoken introduction begins the album, only quickly rip into one power meta metal romp after another. Dawn Of The Second Sun and Providence give listener short, calmer respites at the start, but then all things get fast and heavy quickly. After eight pummeling tracks, a fine acoustic and vocal ballad, On The Trail, arrives, but that's not the end. The conclusion is the brisk power metal anthem Equilibrium (Rise Of The Ruler), completing the album and story. Or perhaps suggesting another sequel?
All in all, thirty years on and still going strong, Rise Of The Ruler finds veteran German metal band Mob Rules in fine form, delivering their well-crafted melodic heavy power metal. Recommended, especially if dig the band and genre.
