Iconic and classic American rock band Giant returns after a three year hiatus with their sixth studio album, Stand And Deliver. The current core of the band remains, the rhythm section of Mike Brignardello on bass and David Huff on drums. Kent Hilli (Perfect Plan) joined the band on vocals in 2021 and first appeared on 2022's Shifting Time. For the latest long player, One Desire's Jimmy Westerlund brings his lead guitar chops. Westerlund also mixed the album, along with Alessandro Del Vecchio, who also adds keyboards.
Nearly 40 years in the hard rock genre, drummer and founder David Huff expressed his excitement for the new album: Making Giant records has always been our passion! Thanks to everyone at Frontiers we can make our dreams happen. I know it's a bit of a different lineup but whoever is in the lineup the legacy of Giant lives on. Amen to that.
With every Giant album you get a solid platter of finely crafted AOR melodic hard rock bursting with guitar and vocal harmony, song melody, hooks in riffs and refrains, and fandamnastic guitar solos. Westerlund's fret work simply soars. But fine guitar has always been a signature characteristic of all Giant albums. If you love lead guitar, you will love this album.
Concerning the songs, as usual, there are three videos included with the review. A few more deserve mention. As with past albums, David's brother Dan makes several contribution: Time To Call It Love (video above), Holdin’ On For Dear Life and Paradise Found, coming both from his sessions with Van Stephenson (Time To Burn). Then there's Beggars Can't Be Choosers, a fast and heavy song that nears melodic metal. Alternatively the closing number, Pleasure Dome, is a heavy yet moderately paced song, driven by sharp guitar work throughout.
All said, Giant's Stand And Deliver is, as always, another powerhouse album of their finely crafted and highly entertaining AOR driven melodic hard rock. For this classic genre, it doesn't get much better than this. Obviously recommended.
