The Nail is a new project created by Frontiers Music to feature rising new vocalist Girish Pradhan, known for his work with Girish & The Chronicles and The End Machine. Turkish producer and composer Cenk Eroglu (ex-Winger) was brought on to write songs and produce the album. He, in turn, asked Kip Winger to scout for musicians to assist in band development. Which led to recruiting Eroglu's sons, Efe, 26, on lead guitar and multi-instrumentalist Reis Ali, 17, for bass, drums, guitar, and songwriting. Efe has been praised for his guitar work by his peers, including Bumblefoot, John 5, and Reb Beach. Besides producing, their father pitches in with guitar, Hammond organ, and bgvs.
Girish has praised the project: "This is unlike like any record I have ever done. Different. Many of my listeners have always requested that I do something different for a change, and I feel like this record is exactly what they need ... it's all thanks to a great and a dedicated team, working tirelessly in the background, helping me bring out a different side of me ... a great project that I got to be a part of."
Musically, The Nail is found at the intersection of traditional heavy metal and hard rock. The songs are propelled by thick, brisk riffage and a tough thumping rhythm section that doesn't skimp on either power or groove. Efe Eroglu delivers significant and creative guitar solos worthy of his peer's praise. Sometimes, however, they seemed smothered by the rest of song arrangement. Girish strays little for his rough razor, yet melodic, vocal style, one that fits well with the strong riffage. The label suggests comparisons to Eighties metal and artists such as Judas Priest, Dio, and Black Sabbath. Perhaps. The reader can listen to the three videos included with this review and make their own decision.
For the songs, I was drawn to the ones that really put the rock groove into the heavy metal, like Hangman's Noose, Hit & Run, The Nail, and the speedy No Time To Burn. Closer to traditional heavy metal are Soul Screamer and the thumping, slow churning Blackout (Popeye's Sin). A slow rising anthemic ballad, Fall Back Now, closes the album with the quintessential guitar solo finale in the latter third.
Featuring some promising new and young talent, The Nail's eponymous debut album packs a punch with heavy metal rock driven by strong riffs, ambitious guitar solos, and Girish Pradhan assertive vocals. Whether this will be a one-off project or not is yet to be seen. Recommended.
