Fate: Reconnect 'N Ignite

Heavy Metal Rock
4.0/5.0

Danish band Fate was formed in 1984 by former Mercyful Fate guitarist Hank Shermann. Their eponymous debut, Fate appeared a year later. Before disbanding in 1993, the band would release three more albums with Shermann leaving before 1988's Cruisin' for a Bruisin'. Fate would be revived when invited to the Deep Impact Festival in Germany in 2005 for a one-off reunion. Thanks to a generous fan response the reunion would stick and the band released their fifth album, aptly titled, V the next year.

Fate

Fast forward 17 years and several more personnel changes, Fate returns with their eighth and latest studio album Reconnect 'N Ignite, their first new music since 2013's If Not For The Devil. (Also reissued last year.) The album features the return of vocalist Peer Johansson, with new players Soren Ryan on drums and Patrik Tornblom on keyboards.

Guitarist for Fate since 2011, Torben Enevoldsen had this to say about the new album: "We are very much looking forward to Reconnect 'N Ignite, and can't wait for everyone to hear the new songs. We are all very excited about the new material and are anxious to present it to our fans, old and new ones alike!"

After several spins, I would describe Fate's latest sound as heavy metal rock. The foundation is still classic hard rock, yet with a sharp and significant metal edge, notably in the riffage, rhythm section, and vocals. Of the first two, the riffs are rabid, the bass thumping, and the drums pounding. To the vocals, Peer Johansson has a raw, raspy, and assertive vocal style that makes the songs sound aggressive, perhaps even hostile to some listeners. Examples abound across the album, with Children Of A Lesser God, Feel The Burn, Nowhere To Run, I'm On Fire, and Around The Sun as significant raging metal rockers. The odd song out is likely Hold On, which is rather tame compared to the others. As always, Torben Enevoldsen delivers fantastic fiery guitar solos.

The return of Fate to the studio after an eleven year absence finds the band venturing into the realm of hard and heavy metal rock. Reconnect 'N Ignite offers blistering riffs, roaring guitar solos, and edgy, assertive vocals. It's some headbanging stuff.
