We were fist introduced to India's About Us a mere 17 months ago with their eponymous debut album, About Us. The album was an ambitious recording of melodic hard rock infused with AOR accessibility. Reviewers and fans across the Internet gave the album consistent praise. Now, the sextet from Nagaland with their sophomore outing, Take A Piece.
The album marks a significant turn in sound and style for About Us. Gone is the AOR melodic hard rock. Instead, it's been replaced with modern metal rock. The rock groove and song melody is still there, but the songs are driven by heavier metal, even some power metal. However, what makes Take A Piece more modern metal is the harsh, nearly hardcore, vocals present in many songs.
These harsh vocals appear within Endure, Legion, Far Away, Hope, Beautiful Misery, and perhaps lesser so with Fortitude. Legion was, by far, the most hostile use of this vocal style. So much so, the first time I heard it, it shocked me. I couldn't believe I was listening to the same band.
Alternatively, vocalist Sochan Kikon returns to his more melodic voice with EVH, Reels For Eternity, and the opener Come To You, a fine melodic metal rocker. However, what remains a constant is About Us fine songwriting. Vacating the vocals, you will still find some quite satisfying and entertaining twin-guitar driven heavy metal rock with fantastic guitar solos.
Asaid, with Take A Piece, About Us takes a musical turn away from AOR melodic hard rock to modern melodic metal completer with harsh, nearly hardcore, vocals in several songs. But their talent for creating exciting and entertaining heavy metal rock remains.
