The Defiants: Drive

Melodic Hard Rock/AOR
5.0/5.0

Where does the time go? The Defiants' last album Zokusho dropped four years. That was pre-pandemic, and the last four years have been a blur for many of us. As we know, The Defiants features past and present Danger Danger members: Paul Laine (vocals), Bruno Ravel (bass), and Rob Marcello (guitar). Their latest and third studio album is Drive.

The Defiants

And it's a barn burner. Classic melodic hard rock with some metal vigor, wrapped an AOR air play sensibility. The Defiants' skill is their strong songwriting ability. Notably all songs turn upon song melody, vocal harmony, and rock rhythm and groove. The catchy refrains and fiery guitar solos are dropped in. This is rock n roll.

Like the previous albums, Drive is packed with consistently lively, vigorous, and entertaining songs. There's no mistakes here, not bumps in the road. Some straight up edge riff rockers arrive with Against The Grain, Hey Life, and What Are We Waiting For. Poised for arena roof raising are Go Big Or Go Home and 19 Summertime, both with big groove and bigger choruses. Perhaps more on a mellow AOR side are Another Time Another Place and Miracle, a smooth anthemic ballad. Said simply, The Defiants' Drive is another outstanding and entertaining album of their catchy and powerful, classic melodic hard rock. Get it. Quite recommended.
