Signum Regis: Undivided

Traditional Power Metal
4.0/5.0

Excepting their 2008 self-titled debut album and their tenth anniversary album, Decennium Primum, every other Signum Regis album has crossed my review desk. Signum Regis has been a fixture in the European theater's metal underground, playing shows and festivals in their native Slovakia, and also Czech Republic, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium and Switzerland. Since their previous album, 2019's Seal Of A New World, the quintet has dropped an EP, Flag Of Hope (2020) and a live album, Made In Switzerland (2022). Now, returning to the Ulterium Records label, Signum Regis arrives with their latest and seventh long-player, Undivided.

Signum Regis

Jacob Hansen (Kamelot, Evergrey, et al), who has worked with the band in the past, produced, mixed and mastered the album, a first for him. Undivided also features some guest musicians: Slovakian guitarist Jimi Cimbala and Affector guitarist Daniel Fries offer solos in five different songs; David Akesson (Moonlight Agony, Symphonity, etc) adds backing vocals.

Turning to the album, and cutting to the chase, Signum Regis continues to offer their classic European power metal with songs inspired by Biblical and Christian themes. Essentially, all the songs are fast and heavy with gallop and groove, and then race to the quintessential epic guitar solos. Epic they are, and abundant across this album. If you're into guitar-forward power metal, or simply lead guitar solos (as I am), you will dig Signum Regis and Undivided.

All these things are self-evident throughout, nearly to the point of benign repetitiveness. But for pure bombastic power metal glory some top picks for me were Prepare for War, Daniel's Prophecy, Sea Of Galilee, and the epic seven minute Shield My Soul.

All said, with Undivided, Signum Regis returns with another album of their guitar-driven power metal. If you dig the band, or simply love traditional European power metal in all it's bombastic glory, you will want this album. Recommended.
