Narnia: Ghost Town

Heavy Melodic Metal Rock
4.0/5.0

Started in 1996, Swedish band Narnia is well into their third decade of music. Established by guitarist CJ Grimmark and vocalist Christian Liljegren has been modestly dropping albums with Christian themes consistently since 1997's Awakening. A short hiatus was taken around 2010, only to find the band rebounding with 2016's eponymous Narnia. Now the band returns with their ninth studio album, Ghost Town.

Narnia

Once more, the album finds Narnia exploring their consistent melodic heavy/power metal informed by rock groove, neo-classical guitar work, and skillful keyboard embellishment. That last element has been given a boost. Across the album, keyboardist Martin Härenstam has been given more room to stretch. Otherwise, with a few exceptions, you'll find this album to quite entertaining.

To consider some content, songs like Glory Daze, Rebel, Thief, or Ghost Town turn on more power metal rock with plenty of heaviness, spunk, and groove. Alternatively, Descension moves like an arena anthem with strong synth atmosphere and Grimmark' neo-classical wizardry. Among many other songs, Out Of The Silence gives Härenstam a larger synth presence. But Grimmark is also there. The song includes a recitation of the Lord's Prayer by Saviour Machine vocalist Eric Clayton. I mentioned earlier some exceptions. I wasn't to keen on Alive, a sort of plodding heavy rock number. Modern Day Pharisees was also somewhat awkward to start but recovered with that fine combination of synth and guitar work in the latter half.

Nevertheless, most things considered, Narnia's Ghost Town is another interesting and entertaining album of melodic metal rock from this talented band. Fans of the band and Christian metal in general should be pleased. Recommended.
