Kent Hilli: Nothing Left To Lose

Melodic Hard Rock/AOR
5.0/5.0

Most Dangerdog readers and AOR genre fans will recall vocalist Kent Hilli who arrived with Perfect Plan's first album All Rise, a fandamntastic debut. The album established him as one of the great new voices of the genre. Three years later and another Perfect Plan album under his belt, Hilli released his first solo album The Rumble. Ditto on the preceding kudo. With his resume preceding him, Hilli found his voice on call for several more projects: Restless Spirits (2X), Michael Palace, T3nors, and a revived version of classic rock band Giant. Now the vocalist returns with his long awaited second solo effort, Nothing Left To Lose.

Let's start with the finish: Get this album. Buy it now. If you liked his previous solo album or any Perfect Plan album, you will love this album. And there's good reasons why. One is the involvement of One Desire's Jimmy Westerlund on guitar, bgvs, keyboards, and production. We all know what fine AOR craftsman that One Desire are. Other significant collaborators include Kristian Fyhr, Mike Palace, Rick Altzi, and Nightwish drummer Kai Hahto (and more).

I've already made my conclusion in the preceding paragraph. Which is to say every song within Nothing Left To Lose, from front to back, is terrific. But here are a few highlights, some personal favorites. One is the title track which turns on a terrific vocal arrangement. Another is Too Young with its classic AOR arena anthem style that reminds of Journey power (which is saying something). For a some straight up hard rock, there's Heard It All Before, yet with another harmonious vocal arrangement. Another personal favorite is Does He Love Like Me for the great saxophone line from Oleg Lavrentev. Some final general observations. The guitar work kills with great solos from Westerlund, Palace, and Jimmy Hedlund. And the overall song composition definitively suits Hilli's vocal style which is a significant accomplishment.

To repeat myself (again), Kent Hilli's second solo effort, Nothing Left To Lose, is phenomenal, another solid, well-crafted, and entertaining of AOR melodic hard rock from a talented fellow who can really belt it out. Extremely recommended.
