Crossing Rubicon: Perfect Storm

Melodic Hard Rock/AOR
4.0/5.0

Always about introducing new talent or new collaborations, Frontiers Music gives us newcomers Crossing Rubicon (see note below). The band features Turkish multi-instrumentalist Cenk Eroglu (ex-Winger, Xcarnation) and singer John Bisaha from The Babys. Yeah. You read that right. The Babys. I had no idea the were still performing, and obviously without John Waite. I was a huge fan back in the late Seventies. (The current "Baby's tour frequently in North America and Europe.)

Crossing Rubicon

Essentially, with Crossing Rubicon you have straight-up melodic hard rock in AOR wrapper. If you're thinking a "Babys" motif, you'd be mistaken, perhaps. Bisaha sounds nothing like Waite (I least my ears say so); the songs (with one exception: Crash & Burn featuring Bisaha's wife Holly), do not have the famous Baby's female bgvs; and, also, their tunes don't have that early era's English pop vibe.

Instead, with some arrangements, Bisaha is more assertive in his vocal style and the songs can rock heavier. Notable examples would include songs like Reason To Die, the fastish Cry Me A River, or On The Run, with its brisker, tough riffs. Alternatively, the AOR melodic rock groove gets the push with the lighter Get Away, smoother Scar, and anthemic Time (Without You). Throughout, you'll find some inventive and creative guitar solos from Eroglu with favorites within Time, Perfect Storm, Never Again, and Never Again, the qualifying ballad.

All things considered, Crossing Rubicon, featuring Cenk Eroglu (ex-Winger, Xcarnation) and singer John Bisaha from The Babys, is a solid album with well-crafted AOR melodic (hard) rock songs that should entertain fans of the genre. Recommended.

1The band name is a reference to 49 BCE when Julius Caesar and his army crossed the stream that separates Roman provinces from Rome itself. Knowing it to be an act of civil war, it was Caesar's point of know return. The Republic would fall and he would become dictator for life.
