Long serving German metal band Wizard has had a consistent career and album output since forming three decades ago. The core of the band remains with original members Snoppi Denn on drums, Michael Maass on guitar, and Sven D'Anna at the microphone. With the advent of their twelfth studio, Metal In My Head, fans are introduced to new guitarist Tommy Hartung (No Inner Limits).
Perhaps the album title is a slight misnomer. Wizard doesn't just have metal in their heads like a steel plate, but in their blood. Cut them and Wizard bleeds traditional heavy metal. Their metal is fast and heavy, bristling with twin guitar riffage, roaring with epic guitar solos, and powered by the rhythm section's gallop and groove. These things are self-evident from the start with I Bring The Light In The Dark, but also Years Of War, Firesword, and Feast. Revisiting some classic speed metal, both Metal In My Head and We Fight put the nitro into Wizard's heavy metal engine. And don't be fooled by 30 Years Of Metal's softer vocal start as it merges into another galloping ode to Wizard's devotion to heavy metal. The exception to this context is Whirlewolf, a lighter, piano-driven, metal anthem with choral-like vocals, composed with Feanor's Gustavo Acosta, and dedicated to Martjo Brongers (Vortex, Steel Shock) who passed away unexpectedly in 2019. All said, if you're a Wizard fan, or simply enjoy well-crafted and entertaining, traditional heavy metal, you will dig Wizard's Metal In My Head. Recommended to headbangers everywhere.
