Resurrection Kings: Skygazer

Heavy Metal Rock
4.5/5.0

The summer of 2021 marks the return of Resurrection Kings, founded by songwriter and guitarist Craig Goldy and featuring vocalist Chas West and veteran drummer Vinnie Appice. Most constant readers will remember Goldy and Appice with their time spent with Ronnie James Dio. Goldy was also a member of Giuffira; Appice a part of Black Sabbath, among many other musical adventures. Now the trio returns with their second effort, Skygazer.

Resurrection Kings

Needless to say the band and the album is a platform for Goldy's songwriting and guitar skills. Across the recording you'll hear creative and various riffs and an abundance of powerful guitar solos. As guitar work goes, if you're a fan of lead guitar as I am or simply an aspiring guitarist, you'll be please and impressed. For the young guitarist, Goldy is putting on a clinic. But all his gifts are wrapped up in songwriting that advances plenty of rock rhythm and groove, guitar and vocal harmony, and notable refrains.

Mentioning a few songs, you'll find some straight up heavy metal rock with World's On Fire, the more hard and heavy rockers with Set Me On Fire, Is This The End, or Troubled Soul. Yet that last song, to these ears, had some latent blues effect lingering about. The same might be said for Tears as well. Piano leads and travels through the heavy ballad, Don't Blame Our Love, leading to another terrific Goldy solo. But the real highlight here maybe be the title cut, Skygazer, which has a totally 80's DIO groove going on. Nice. All said, and simply, Skygazer is a fine return to form for Resurrection Kings with Craig Goldy and crew offering classic, guitar-driven heavy metal rock. Easily recommended.
