Okay. So I've been waiting for this album with some anticipation. Why? Kent Hilli is the vocalist for Sweden's Perfect Plan, perhaps one of my favorite Swedish melodic hard rock bands of the last few years with one of the best voices in the business. Their debut album was fandamntastic and album of the year here at Dangerdog Music Reviews in 2018, and 2020's Time For A Miracle was equally spectacular. Now Hilli arrives with his first solo album, The Rumble, and I'm all ears and on board.
First, besides Hilli's immense vocal talent, this solo effort features the multi-instrumentalist and all-around genre wizard Michael Palace (Palace, Angelica, Code Red, et al) who produces and adds all instruments. Second, most songs are written by Hilli, so there's that personal commitment which tunes each song to his voice. Moreover, there's a solid amount of diversity in the songwriting from harder rockers to AOR anthems to fine ballads. Taking one by one, you can kick out the jams with rockers like Never Be Mine, The Rumble, and Miss Up To No Good, but don't be fooled by its soft start. On the AORish side, there's Does It Feel Like Love or All For Love, perhaps heavier. Ballads come with Heaven Can Wait and Still In Love, both with some acoustic guitar, yet wherein you can hear the smoothness of Hilli's melodic vocals. All in all, Hilli's solo debut, The Rumble, is a solid one, a simply strong and entertaining album of AOR-infused melodic hard rock driven by his superb vocal talent. Easily recommended.

This experience deserves mention for one very good reason: Finland's One Desire is one of the best classic AOR melodic hard rock bands in the genre and, perhaps, the world, right now So, I also apologize, in ... [ Read More ]
