Apparently, in the midst of a global pandemic, many of us have had extra time to kill, including UK heavy rockers Inglorious. Yes, the just released their fourth studio album We Will Ride (with a new lineup) only eight months ago. But when you can't tour as you like, or as frequently, to clubs and festivals, why not make some more music. The quintet returns with a new covers album, Heroine, wherein they give their favorite female rockers their own heavy rock twist.

To be honest, when it comes to cover albums I'm rather ambivalent. I've heard some good ones, notably the tribute variety, and some really awful ones, notably the tribute variety. Basically, for a band, a cover album is a crap shoot, win or lose. A cover album of songs by female artists, while not all that novel, doesn't really punch my musical ticket. In the case of Heroine, Inglorious has captured artists across the musical spectrum of R&B, pop rock, and hard rock. (The track list is below.) But many, often from the pop scene (not my thing), like Miley Cyrus, Avril Lavigne, or Alanis Morissette hold no interest for me and I don't know the songs.

Alternatively, I'll speak to those I know. Heart's Barracuda sounds like the same, because they didn't screw with guitar lines or vocal arrangement. The heavy take on Houston's Queen Of The Night is pretty righteous; it definitely has the energy of the original. Conversely, you can't beat Joan Jett doing I Hate Myself For Loving You; Nathan James simply can't bring out her classic sarcastic punk sneer. But it rocks like the original all the same. Whether as the original single or in Napoleon Dynamite, Cyndi Lauper's Time After Time is a favorite. Here? Not so much. Alas! Cover albums.

All said, give Inglorious credit for being enlightened males in an era of progressive political culture, but their female artist tribute album Heroine may be hit or miss for some fans.
