In case you were wondering, Gygax the metal band is named after the legendary Gary Gygax the father of role playing games. With Dave Arneson, he created the mighty, and also legendary, Dungeons & Dragons or D&D to players and guilds. Of course, where would heavy metal be without themes of fantasy, mythology, sci-fi or, in the case of California's Gygax, gaming. The band arrives with their third long player, aptly titled High Fantasy.
The Gygax style is old school melodic heavy metal mixed with some speed and hard rock groove. You might hear some musical references from Think Lizzy to Manilla Road to Cirith Ungol. What you will definitely hear is strong twin guitar harmony and bristling solos wrapped in plenty of rock boogie and groove. In other words, Gygax delivers guitar-forward melodic heavy metal rock, and they do it in the time honored three minute song. Songs like Hide Mind, Mage Lust, Spell Shaker, and High Fantasy leap from the gate with gallop, thriving guitars, and head straight to thrilling guitar solos. With Something So Familiar, the guitar start rips the curtain away as the song develops into heavy metal rock. Alternatively, Gygax mix the pacing within The Eyes Have It while the riffs are razor sharp and the solos sizzling. All said, Gygax's High Fantasy is high quality and totally entertaining traditional melodic heavy metal rock with strong guitar lines and plenty of groove. Whoa. That was a mouthful. Recommended.
