What's that you say? Another female-fronted symphonic power metal band? Indeed. Arriving from Madrid, here's Crusade Of Bards. But they're not just a symphonic power metal band, but a symphonic "pirate" power metal. Aargh there matey! This sextet features an equal balance of three female and male musicians, and one of the gals, Mery "Deep" Red, plays cello. The band offers their debut album, Tales Of Bards & Beasts on the Pride & Joy Music label.
Essentially and musically, Crusade Of Bard's symphonic power metal turns upon the basic elements: dense riffage, synth orchestration, a galloping rhythm section, operatic female vocals with choral arrangements and then juxtaposed with dirty, pirate I'm assuming, male vocals. Along the way, most every song is enlivened by a fine guitar solo from Adrian "The Time Knitter" Carrero. Yeah, all the players have adopted creative (or not) and mythical stage names. And that pretty much summarizes what you'll hear within Tales Of Bards & Beasts. But, honestly, there's really nothing new or novel to be found. Crusade Of Bards has found the musical methodology of the genre and works it to the expected results. The sea of female-fronted symphonic metal bands has merely gotten larger, and will continue to grow. Crusade Of Bards is just another band vying for your attention and nipping at the heels of giants like Nightwish or Within Temptation, like a puppy pestering his master. Fundamentally, while derivative and predictable, if you like female-fronted symphonic power metal, you may enjoy Crusade Of Bards and Tales Of Bards & Beasts. Check them out and support the band if you dig them.
