Should we still be singing the praises of The Answer? After all, we music journalist jockeys went freakin' lady gaga over them in 2005 on the strength of one single, pissed our pants over the debut Rise, and basically vomited gold coins in their purses over 2009's Everyday Demons, my last experience. Actually, to tell the truth, I thought they had disappeared.
But they didn't. These blokes from Northern Ireland are still cranking out their heavier, blues infected, hard rock like it's Seventies deja vu. But The Answer aren't some throwback band. They simply eschew modern rock conventions for some honest, good times, rock. We're talking punch to the gut and a thumping of the ear drums while you tap your toe to the groove hard rock.
But is New Horizon, their fourth album, as good as my last experience with them. Maybe. Yet, it's got some great rockers. New Horizon hooks you with its strong bass line, defining groove, and catchy chorus. Concrete is just that: heavy and persistent with chunky riffs. Burn You Down thuds along with that same heaviness taking no prisoners. Leave With Nothin' and Baby Kill Me brings some blues groove. Then there's the smoldering, Speak Now, which might be least heavy rocker here. The stand out track is Spectacular where all the right elements gel, groove, heaviness, sharp guitar, crafty drumming, and catchy refrain, for a tasty hard rock cocktail.
With New Horizon, The Answer stays the course, straying little from their chosen path, creating melodic heavier hard rock. Recommended.
