PepperDome: Chaos Point

Avant Garde/Art/Alternative Rock
2.5/5.0

John TokarcsykMarching to the beat of a different drummer describes John Tokarczyk's Pepperdome project and, after all, he is the the drummer. The six song EP Chaos Point is PepperDome's third recording. The music within is, if anything, quite unique; don't suspect any one is doing anything like Tokarczyk.

Chaos Point sounds like Frank Zappa melded with the Talking Heads and washed through some strange alt rock syrup. Sometimes, it sounds like circus music, very freaky strange circus music, as on Flesh, Celebrity, and to a lesser extent, Everyone Tells Me. I hear the music and imagine clowns, jesters, and jugglers with dark garments and evil grins bouncing about a sawdust circle. There's also this singularly monotonous guitar playing throughout that flits about like a wasp in the summer. As for his instrument of choice, Tokarczyk is a fine drummer, and his drumming is likely the highlight of the entire Chaos Point project.

If you long to be the first of your friends to discover the latest alternative, absurd, or art rock artist, then look no farther than Pepperdome's Chaos Point. Moments of pure pleasure or entertainment, however, are relatively fleeting.
