T3nors: Naked Soul

AOR Melodic Rock
4.5/5.0

Three tenors? Pavarotti, Domingo, and Carreras? Nope. Toby Hitchcock, Kent Hilli, and Robbie LaBlanc. T3ners is a Frontiers Music project joining three well-known tenor vocal talents from the AOR world for a new album. (This concept may remind some readers of the label's recent Venus5 project featuring five female vocalists.) Hitchcock is known for his work with Jim Peterik, Pride Of Lions, and several solo efforts; Hilli for his fine work with Swedish newcomers Perfect Plan but also with Giant and Restless Spirits; and Lablanc for Blanc Faces, Find Me, and many more appearances. Needless to say this is promising trio. Naked Soul is their debut album.

T3nors: Hitchcock, Hilli, and LaBlanc

First, and second, impressions being what they are, often dubious or suspect. I wondered how the vocal arrangements would sound with three similar voices and vocal range. Fundamentally, as a listener, I think it works out quite well. All three fellows compliment each other and, if you listen carefully enough, you will pick up on their individual timbre.

However, it's one thing to bring together three amazing talents. It's another to give their voices a similar context to express that talent. Basically, the men are dropped into the music they know best: AOR melodic hard rock from a label and a songwriting team that knows the genre inside and out. Is the music better than the vocals? Now, you're just messing with me. The music compliments the voices; the vocals raise the song melody and harmony within the compositions (which is just one thing fine vocals should do).

By example, listening to spry and heavier rockers like Torn or Silent Cries, T3nors add the proper strength and passion to some already assertive music. For AOR anthems like Stand For Love, April Rain, or Nights, T3nors raise the song's melody and harmony through their combined, and again passionate, vocal harmony. The rest of the songs are equally enjoyable and entertaining. Essentially, all said, T3nor's Naked Soul is the perfect pairing of three exceptional AOR vocalists with well-crafted and entertaining AOR melodic rock songs. Easily recommended.
