Yes, the mighty and ubiquitous power metal genre. Can we not have just one more band? Indeed. Arriving from Southampton is Battle Born, a quintet of fellows who want to keep the English power metal tradition alive and kicking with their debut five song self-titled EP.
Without apology, Battle Born wants to follow more in the European power metal tradition, which means they will include keyboards in their song compositions. Strict power metal purists would give a loud "Harrumph" at that. Nevertheless, Battle Born has the proper power metal elements, namely twin guitars, bristling solos, plently of gallop and groove, and lyrical odes to heroic battles and heavy metal.
For a quick run down of the songs, Battle Born and Sovngarde Awaits are perhaps the speediest songs, with the latter having a stronger synth presence for a symphonic character. Alternatively, Man Of War is more heavy, but with a marching rock groove and a notable catchy refrain. For Our Home is simply a steady to rising symphonic metal anthem with the requisite epic guitar solo. Finally, Bring The Metal Back is Battle Born's galloping anthem to all things heavy metal, made complete with a cheesy, audience participation, chant of the song title. Basically, if you like traditional, and somewhat pretentious, European power metal, you will enjoy Battle Born's debut EP.
