Old Mother Hell: Lord Of Demise

Traditional Heavy Metal
4.0/5.0

Hailing from Germany, power trio Old Mother Hell rose from the Mannheim underground metal scene in 2015. Two years later, the band would drop their self-titled debut album, entirely self-produced and promoted, in September. The recording caught the intention of traditional metal label Cruz Del Sur who re-released the album five months later in 2018 to the international market, where it found larger fan appreciation and support. Now Old Mother Hell returns with their second effort, Lord Of Demise, which features new drummer Michael Frölich who also assisted in songwriting.

Old Mother Hell

Metal speaking, Old Mother Hell isn't reinventing the musical wheel or themselves. The trio still plays traditional, keep it true, heavy metal, sometimes fast and heavy with plenty of groove and an abundance of tactical guitar solos. You'll hear this with Shadows Within, Avenging Angel, and Betrayal At Sea, which also has a fine, lighter vocal breakdown about two-thirds in. But Old Mother Hell can also tap into some classic doom metal influences. Lord Of Demise has some unsettling sluggish pacing in the front half before speeding up for the guitar solo in the latter half. Yet, even more doomish is Another Fallen Saviour which offers thick crushing riffs and a lumbering rhythm section throughout, and no guitar solo. Yup. You read that correctly. Once more, with Lord Of Demise Old Mother Hell revisits and continues to offer their doom-infused traditional heavy metal. If you dig the genre or the band, you will enjoy this album. Recommended.
