Led Zeppelin: Mothership

It must be great to be a legendary rock band that has influenced generations of music fans and musicians. On top of worldwide fame and acclaim, you have the benefit of a back catalogue that continues to fill your bank account with cash. Led Zeppelin introduced the world to a blues laden heavy rock that has been much imitated but never successfully reproduced. They stand as a seminal force in hard rock, heavy metal and many other genres. With the release of the compilation set, 'Mothership,' we are introduced once again to this outstanding band.

This is essentially a greatest hits album, the best of the best. Supposedly these songs were chosen by the surviving members. Sure, you and I may have picked other songs to include. But honestly, if you wanted to rip your own greatest hits disc for drive time, you would probably include all these songs. The greats are here: 'Black Dog,' 'Kashmir,' 'Dazed And Confused,' Whole Lotta Love,' 'Nobody's Fault But Mine, and of course, 'Stairway To Heaven,' and many more. I would have added 'Going To California,' 'South Bound Suarez' and maybe some others. If there is one flaw in this collection it is in the selection of 'Heartbreaker' without the inclusion of the following 'Living Loving Maid.' One listen and you realize things end too abruptly. If Page and company really did pick these songs, then this a very strange oversight indeed.

This is a great collection for fans, and an even better collection to introduce a younger generation to some timeless rock 'n roll. This compilation also comes in a second package that includes a DVD of concert footage culled from the 2003 Led Zeppelin DVD. Overall this a very good release. Look later this month for a reissue of the 'The Song Remains The Same' which will include six new songs not found on the original recording from Madison Square Garden.
