The cream of the retro rockin’ resurgence crop has announced that they’re making their long anticipated return to the shores of the United Kingdom and northern Europe this April! Stone Axe are loading the road cases, fine tuning the live set, and packing fresh clothes for the 2012 edition of their European Tour with Stubb and Trippy Wicked, once again, performing in the support slots. Last year, Stone Axe went overseas to support the Expanded Edition of their first album and, in the process, turned heads and made a ton of new fans and friends. This year, Stone Axe is touring in support of the 2-disc Deluxe Edition of the band’s second album, featuring the highly regarded follow up to the debut, as well as a bonus disc packed with vinyl only releases and rare oddities from the Stone Axe vault. Chybucca Sounds. Sonic Abuse and more. Captain Zen Beyond has called them “the best classic rock band around” and the album “brilliant without any weak points.” Classic Rock Magazine saw their brand of hard-driving rock to be fitting enough for one of their cover-mounted compilation CD’s. 2011 was another banner year for all things melodic hard rock and heavy metal, progressive rock and metal. However, after reviewing more than 400 albums, and listening to nearly 200 more submissions, it’s hard, sometimes, to recall what truly stood out, what real cream rose to the top.
But being the glutton for punishment that I am, once more I’ll attempt to pick my favorites of 2011. Here’s my top picks, about 15, in three general genres: aor/melodic (sometimes hard) rock, heavy metal, and progressive rock/metal. Again, these are in no particular order. (more…)

British rock legends UFO will release their new album, “Seven Deadly”, on February 28, 2012 (one day earlier internationally) via SPV/Steamhammer. The effort, which was recorded with producer Tommy Newton at his Area 51 studio in Celle, Germany, will be made available as a limited-edition digipack (including two bonus tracks), a double gatefold LP with printed innersleeves and colored vinyl, standard-edition CD and as a digital download.
