Revolution Road 2013 Album CD Review

Revolution Road: Revolution Road

Melodic Hard Rock
4.0/5.0

Revolution Road is essentially the vehicle for vocalist Stefan Berggren (Snakes In Paradise, Company Of Snakes). The project was created by ubiquitous producer Alessandro Del Vecchio and Avenue Of Allies label owner Gregor Klee after conversing about some of their favorite singers who have been absent for some time. Considering this trio of collaborators, you have some expectations for the type of music and it's caliber.

Fundamentally, this is straight classic melodic hard rock with an AOR feel, not far removed from the Eighties, yet always sounding fresh. With Del Vecchio involved in song writing, producing, playing synths, and recruiting top notch talent to assist, you know you're going to get solid arrangements, good sounding songs.

For his part, Berggren has always had a strong clear rock voice, able to range from smooth ballad like Pretending Hearts to heavier rock Ain't Gonna Give My Heart Away featuring Primal Fear's Alex Beyrodt on lead guitar. (After Berggren's fine vocals, the guitar leads are the best part of this album.)

Actually, the album has more than a few heavier melodic rock songs. Others include Losing You, Take Your Love to Town, and Balloon, although it doesn't start that way. Songs leaning more towards that AOR side are the opener Wings of Hope, yet even this has some edge especially in the sharp guitar solo, but more so the title track. It's more an anthem, and definitely turns on Berggren's vocal delivery. Again, if you like all things melodic hard rock in the classic tradition, you'll enjoy Stefan Berggren's Revolution Road. Recommended.
